Down in Seminole country, cattle has been a big part of the history of both the state of Florida and the Seminole tribe. So much so, that the Muskogee talking people that live by Lake Okeechobee are known as Cow Creeks.
Sometime around 1980 the tribe received some money to develop and modernize the cattle project out at the Brighton reservation. It was a big to do with everyone coming out for free eats and to listen to the newly appointed BIA agent get up and talk and take the occasion to introduce himself to the community.
The new agent started off talking about the great new relationship that he was going to bring to the office representing the federal government and all the great changes he could foresee, The crowd was moved to cheer him on. "LAYGEE, LAYGEE !
You could see that that agent fellow was moved and suprised by the response. So he went on to say that he and the BIAwere going to help make a difference in the well being of the Seminoles and help make their lives better. The crowd rose to their feet and cheered louder, LAYGEE LAYGEE LAYGEE !
He was moved and in awe of the rousing response. As he came off the stage to begin his tour of the new stockyard facilities, James Billie, chairman of the tribe, took him by the arm and said, "Oops watch it, don't step in that pile of laygee !"
